Classical Association Teaching Awards 2021-2022

We are delighted to open nominations for this year’s Teaching Awards.

These awards are designed to recognise outstanding teaching and innovative pre-university education initiatives. Up to five prizes of £500 each will be awarded annually to individuals or projects which have a significant and positive impact on the teaching of Classics in the UK.

Categories include:

  • Lifetime achievement
  • Outstanding new teacher (in teaching for up to three years)
  • Innovative pedagogy
  • Making Classics more inclusive
  • Outstanding state sector initiative
  • Promoting the study of the ancient world in schools/FE

Teaching Awards 2020-2021

After sending out a call for nominations in January 2021 for our first ever round of the annual Classical Association Teaching Awards, we were delighted to receive a total of 75 nominations for 45 individuals or teams, which paid tribute to the energy, enthusiasm and dedication of those involved in Classics education up and down the country. The inspirational stories shared made the job of the shortlisting panel incredibly difficult and are a real testament to the vitality and generosity of the Classics teaching community.

We were delighted to announce that our first five winners are:

  • Award for Making Classics More Inclusive: Andrew Christie of Streatham and Clapham High School

“Andrew is an innovator for inclusion in Classics education and thoroughly deserves this reward. Instead of talking, he acts.”

  • Award for Outstanding State Sector Initiative: Francesca Grilli of Runshaw College

“Francesca has created an incredible suite of resources for OCR Classical Civilisation GCSE, which she has made available to everyone via the Warwick Classics Network (WCN) resource site.”

“Stephen is clearly a dedicated classicist and the messages that he posts are always encouraging of individuals and validating of the subject.”

  • Award for Outstanding New Teacher:  Lawrence McNally of Impington Village College

“Lawrence radiates the generous spirit of the Classics teaching community and deserves to be recognised for his significant achievements – all within his first year of teaching!”

  • Award for Promoting the Study of Classics in Schools/FE: Gemma Williams of Allerton Grange School

“Gemma is the living, breathing embodiment of a teacher who is working tirelessly every day to make Classics more inclusive.”
