Call for Papers: Annual Meeting of Postgraduates in Ancient History
“Mobility and socioeconomic dynamics”
“Historia vero testis temporum, lux veritatis, vita memoriae, magistra vitae, nuntia vetustatis”
“History is truly witness of times past, the light of truth, the life of memory, the teacher of life, the messenger of antiquity”
Cicero, De Oratoria, 2.36
Change is inevitable, and humanity has evolved to adapt to it. While large-scale environmental shifts cause long-term consequences, cultural, social and political circumstances prompt more immediate responses. Antiquity is an especially dynamic period, where religions emerge and fade away, empires rise and fall and socioeconomic agents continuously shape entire populations. To study it is to understand the reasons behind historical events, no matter their general impact.
This year’s Annual Meeting of Postgraduates in Ancient History (AMPAH) leaves the United Kingdom and will take place in Barcelona the 11th and 12th of April 2022. The congress will have the broad subject of “Mobility and socioeconomic dynamics”, which will encompass any subject within the Classical (Roman and Greek) periods (roughly between the Archaic period and Late Antiquity) and areas of influence related to the movement of ideas, goods and people. Proposals should be about (but not be limited to) any subject regarding religion, economy, politics, landscape, architecture, health. Approaches from Archaeology, Gender Studies and Epigraphy are welcome as long as they meet the previously mentioned requirements. Although English is preferable, papers in Spanish will also be accepted. As the name of the event indicates, it is restricted to postgraduate students, but we will accept proposals from last-year undergraduates and young scholars who haven’t still begun their PhD program.
Following the trend already initiated by previous AMPAH’s, but also adapting to the reality of the post-pandemic era, the conference will be held in person, but with the understanding that economic and health issues might be an important deterrent for young international students we will give the possibility to assist virtually. Total or partial funding for international students by the University is also being considered but still not secured, although the possibility of intervening and assisting online makes this AMPAH accessible to anyone.
Similarly, the Organising Committee is exploring the possibility of publishing the proceedings of the AMPAH in order to make the congress a more fruitful event and to give the participants an opportunity to further disseminate their work.
Abstracts of no more than 300 words, together with the name and affiliation of its author and a short bio, should be sent to [email protected] by 1st January 2022. If you want to apply for a travel bursary, please inform us in the same message.
