The British School at Rome: Humanities and Social Science Awards 2021-22

Applications are invited for a number of opportunities to join us at the BSR to undertake research on any aspect of the social, religious, political and economic cultures of the Italian peninsula, and their wider textual, visual and material dissemination and reception, from early prehistory to the modern period. All the opportunities offer membership of a vibrant multidisciplinary research community and a varied and international events programme.

Residential awards for early career researchers

Open to postgraduate and in particular early post-doctoral scholars, to spend three or nine months in residence at the BSR.

These awards offer accommodation in our residence, food, 24-hour access to our historic library collection and, for most early career scholars, a research grant. 

Residential awards for senior scholars

Open to established scholars, normally in post in a UK university, to spend three months in residence at the BSR. ABalsdon Fellowshipis for research in the areas set out above; theHugh Last Fellowshipis for research on classical antiquity (excluding archaeological fieldwork and work on Roman Britain.

These fellowships offer accommodation in our residence, food and 24-hour access to our historic library collection. 

NEW Associate Senior Fellowships, Fellowships, Scholarships and Awards (non-stipendiary, non-residential)

Open to those for whom the residential aspect of other awards that the BSR offers is not feasible, who are in receipt of other grants or means of support that will allow them to spend a prolonged period in Rome.
