Swansea University online seminar series: ‘The Hurt of the Past, the Wounds of the Present: Reading the Classics to Elucidate Mass Incarceration’

TIME: 5:00PM - 5:00PM

DATE: Monday, May 9th 2022

We at Swansea would like to draw your attention to the next in our series of online seminars, on Monday 9 May, at 5pm British Summer Time (= 12pm Eastern Daylight Time). This will be titled ‘The Hurt of the Past, the Wounds of the Present: Reading the Classics to Elucidate Mass Incarceration’.

Professor Emily Allen-Hornblower (Rutgers University) will hold a conversation with mass incarceration survivor and social justice activist Nafeesah Goldsmith (Prison Justice Watch @nj_pjw) about ancient Greek tragedy and its resonance for currently and formerly incarcerated men and women.

The ancient plays serve as an anchor point and opening for dialogue regarding the lives of the incarcerated before, during, and after prison, and the interconnectedness between all of us that classical literature can bring to light. The talk hoists the power of storytelling – ancient and modern – to spark meaningful conversation about what it means to be human and the dehumanization of prisons, putting the shared humanity of all front and center.
