Since 1903, the Classical Association has supported the establishment of local branches – classics communities across England and Wales which meet regularly and are run by dedicated volunteers. There are currently 23 active CA branches providing a mix of lecture programmes, outreach events, competitions, reading groups and other initiatives on classical topics.
Some branches are based within university departments and offer a range of events for students, teachers and the general public; some focus solely on school events; others are based in the community and attract members of all ages and backgrounds. All branches are passionate about promoting interest in the ancient world.
To find your nearest branch, please click on the map or list at the bottom of the page. Branch events are also listed on the Events page.
Starting or Restarting a CA branch
No CA branch near you? Keen to make Classics accessible to new groups of people? Why not set one up? See the guidelines below.
Our Branches Officer, Katrina Kelly, is here to help and the CA can give you digital support, access to our recommended speakers’ guide, social media advice and other assistance. Just get in touch at [email protected].
Grants
The CA assists branches with funding for activities such as competitions, outreach and school events – please use the Branches Grant Form to apply for this funding. Grants given are usually between £200-£1000, but larger grants may be available. We are particularly keen to support initiatives that make classics accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds. To apply for this (at any stage during the year, leaving as much time as possible before you require the money), please email a completed form to the CA’s Information and Grants Secretary, Jane Fortuna.
In recognition of the challenges facing branches during the coronavirus pandemic, the CA is offering branches a one-off grant of up to £500 in 2020-21. To apply for this, please fill in the Covid Support Form with the details requested and return it to the Branches Officer, Katrina Kelly.
The CA will review what further support can be offered when 2020-21 programmes end and the post-pandemic mix of online and in-person events becomes clearer. If you would like assistance and advice about appropriate funding for your branch please don’t hesitate to contact the Branches Officer.
