Persuasion: the art of speech-writing in classical Athens starts on Thursday 6th October for 8 weeks, from 7-8pm UK time. Fraud, adultery, assault, and murder; the cases that came before the Classical Athenian courtrooms could be just as dramatic as the best true crime shows on Netflix. We will read several speeches, delivered by either the prosecution or the defendant in each of these cases, and consider just how persuasive their case really was. Without the help of professional lawyers, litigants could hire a speechwriter to compose an argument for them to deliver before the jury, in an attempt to win the majority of votes. By examining the rhetorical tools which these speechwriters used, we will analyse these speeches and try to evaluate where the lines might have been blurred between reality and fiction.
