We invite proposals for papers at the workshop outlined below, which will take place at University College, Oxford, on Tuesday 1 July 2025. We welcome papers on work in progress and would particularly encourage proposals from PhD students, postdocs, and early career academics.
Workshop on Moral Responsibility in Early Greek Thought
The earliest philosophical accounts of moral responsibility build on and were developed from problems and discourses which are reflected in Greek literature outside philosophy. In which ways? The aim of this workshop will be to explore the issue of moral responsibility in non-philosophical texts so as to illuminate the cultural framework of its philosophical theorization. We welcome abstracts focusing on any area of Archaic and Classical Greek literature (poetry, drama, historiography, oratory, etc.) and their interaction with the Presocratics as well as Plato and Aristotle.
Please send a provisional title and short abstract (max. 250 words) to william.allan@univ.ox.ac.uk by Friday 29 November 2024.
Papers should be 25-30 minutes, followed by discussion.
Note that we will be able to provide two nights’ accommodation in Oxford (30 June-2 July, if needed) and meals, but cannot provide funding for travel.
