Bristol branch talk: Professor Judith Mossman on ‘Becoming a God? Mortals and Gods in Euripides’ Bacchae’

TIME: 7:00PM - 8:30PM

DATE: Thursday, February 5th 2026

VENUE: Badminton School

We are delighted that Professor Judith Mossman will deliver the second talk of our 2025-26 speaker series on Thursday 5th February 2026. We hope that you will be able to join us for:

“Becoming a God? Mortals and Gods in Euripides’ Bacchae” – Prof. Judith Mossman (Coventry and Warwick)

About the talk: This illustrated talk examines Euripides’ Bacchae from the perspective of Dionysiac religion and the perception that Dionysus’ devotees come to resemble him as part of their religious experience. In particular, Pentheus comes to be assimilated visually to the appearance of the god in his role as the Stranger from the East – but his resistance to Dionysus means that he cannot achieve true likeness to the god and he is destroyed. On the other hand, by the end of the play, Dionysus’ divinity has been made terribly manifest, and he takes his place on high, where a Euripidean god should be.

About the speaker: Judith Mossman is Professor Emerita of Classics at Coventry University and an Honorary Professor at Warwick University.

Venue: As usual, the talk will take place in the Peace Memorial Hall at Badminton School, Westbury Rd, Bristol BS9 3BA.

Start time: The talk will start at 7pm. Refreshments will be available from 6.45pm.
