Call for Papers: Trauma, Tragedy and Redemption in the Ancient World and beyond

6 -8 September 2026

Exedra Mediterranean Center, Ortigia, Siracusa

This international and interdisciplinary conference aims to draw upon academic and professional expertise, so to explore interrelated themes of tragedy, trauma and redemption from the ancient world to contemporary contexts. We warmly welcome expressions of interest from, though not limited to, Classicists, Ancient Historians, Biblicists, Art Historians, Artists, Philosophers, Medical Practitioners, Historians and Archaeologists. The conference aims to be enriched by discussions drawing upon a wide range of themes, with examples – though not limited to – as follows: warfare and violence, mythological paradigm, persecution and prejudice, tragic performances, (de)colonisation, medical trauma and recovery, athletic contests and injuries, social repair, death and bereavement, notions of self and reflection, marginalisation and isolation, visualising trauma, salvatory archetypes. We are currently inviting contributors for this international and interdisciplinary conference, with submissions of abstracts of 300–500 words to be received by the 30th April 2026 (for early consideration), with final deadline 30th July 2026, forward to Sam Newington (University of Aberdeen)
