“Signs and Sons in Virgil’s Aeneid” – Dr. Bobby Xinyue (KCL)

About the talk: This talk offers a fresh perspective on how Virgil responded to Augustus’ construction of power in the Aeneid. By exploring key episodes from Books 1, 2, 6, 9 of Virgil’s epic, it will be shown that Virgil makes his readers aware that they can have a role in the mythologization of Augustus’ rule, and that these scenes –– far from straightforward literary propaganda — subtly turn the readers’ gaze to the potential issues that might undo Augustan power.
About the speaker: Bobby Xinyue is Lecturer in Roman Culture at King’s College London. He completed his PhD in Classics at UCL (awarded in 2014) and Masters in Greek and Latin Language and Literature at the University of Oxford (awarded in 2010). Since completing his PhD, he has held teaching positions at the University of Exeter, University of Warwick, King’s College London, and University of Cambridge. He was a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow between 2018 to 2022, and held visiting research positions at the University of Virginia (US) and the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute (Austria).
