8th Postgraduate Course in Epigraphy at the British School at Rome
1st- 11th July 2026
Based at the British School at Rome, this taught course offers a nine-day introduction to the scholarship, publication and display of epigraphic materials from a variety of approaches. Intended for postgraduate scholars of ancient history, archaeology, classics, and museum studies, the course explores the many contexts in which epigraphy is presented: museums, in situ, private collections, archives, and published formats (reference works & online corpora). The course consists of daily lectures, visits and practical activities at Rome’s museums, institutions and sites (including Ostia), with instruction from leading professors and curators. Practical activities (drawing, squeezes, rubbings, object handling) provide unique hands-on interactions with sources, contexts and scholars. Participants also have an opportunity to further their research through an independent project (generally a specific area of epigraphic research), developed during the course and presented in a short paper. Residence at the BSR includes accommodation (breakfast and dinner with residents from the BSR community), 24-hour access to the BSR library, and a year’s membership to the BSR.
The impact of this experience extends well beyond the course, recent collaborations include conference panels (We Will Rock You: New Approaches to Epigraphy panel at the Classical Association Conference, St. Andrews 2025), an edited volume Misic and Graham (eds) Senses, Cognition and Ritual Experience in the Roman World (CUP 2024) and collaborative article in Papers of the British School at Rome 93 (October 2025).
Testimonials, reports, itineraries from previous courses, and a 2026 Course information pack with details of how to apply, can be found on the BSR website.
