Primary School Classics Competition 2022
The Cambridge branch of the Classical Association has been organising Classical competitions for Secondary school students in the Cambridge area for many years. Following our successful initial competition last year, we are pleased, in partnership with Classics for All, to again include KS2 Primary students in this programme, as more and more Primary
schools in our area are now introducing Classics in some way into their curriculum.
We are therefore pleased to share with you the details of the competition! Even if you do not currently teach Classics you are very welcome to take part and encourage your students to enter as we hope the competition will help expand the cultural capital of your students.
What is the competition?
The competition is to creatively respond to ONE of the images listed below. We are very pleased to be working in partnership with the Museum of Classical Archaeology in Cambridge who have these statues in their collection. The images have been purposefully chosen from obscure myths to encourage children to be creative and use their
imagination! If you would like to find out the background to these casts you can find these at the Museum site:

The images and competition details can also be viewed via this link.
If you would like to visit the Museum to see these items for yourself, you are very welcome! School visits are FREE and can be booked via this link: https://www.classics.cam.ac.uk/museum/schools. There are also many useful resources for teaching the Greeks and Romans on this page!
What are the categories?
There are three categories to enter:
● Creative Writing e.g. a poem, or a story, submitted as a word document or pdf.
● Art e.g. a painting or sculpture, submitted as a photograph.
● Video or Animation e.g an animation in clay or drawn, submitted as a video file.
There will be a separate prize for Year 3-4 and Year 5-6 in each category.
How do we enter?
Please attach entries in the required format onto one email per school to Angela Dix at adixcfa@gmail.com by Friday 24th June 2021. Please label individual entries with the name of the student, Year Group and School name. Please contact Angela if you have any further questions. Each school can enter up to 10 entries in total. Entries will be judged by members of the Classical Association and Classics for All. After the competition, the Cambridge CA will send prizes and certificates and some general comments from the judges: we will aim to do this in the two weeks following the competition deadline. Prizes will be in the form of National Book tokens.
How can we introduce Classics into our primary curriculum?
If you would like to receive more information on introducing Classics into your primary curriculum, please contact Angela Dix on adixcfa@gmail.com who will be very pleased to discuss how Classics for All can help you with training, support and resources.
