CANI invites you to a lecture by Prof. Paul Cartledge (University of Cambridge) on Wednesday 26th February 2025 at 6.45pm (GMT), which will take place ONLINE (via Zoom link). Paul Cartledge will look at Athenian democracy with a talk titled:
”Periclean’ Athens, ‘Periclean’ Democracy, ‘Periclean’ Greece? What’s In a Name? Revisiting Biographical History’
Abstract: Ancient Athenian democracy and Pericles appear to go together like love and marriage (as perhaps he did with Aspasia…) but actually the relationship was far more complex, and stormy, than that. In this talk, Pericles will be revealed as the eccentric demagogue he was, within the context of the world’s first fully participatory (men-only) democracy.
Professor Paul Cartledge is the A.G. Leventis Senior Research Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge, and the emeritus A.G. Leventis Professor of Greek Culture (2008-2014) in the Faculty of Classics, University of Cambridge. He taught at Ulster University, Trinity College Dublin, the University of Warwick, and the University of Cambridge. He has written, co-written, edited and co-edited over 25 books in the broad field of ancient Greek history. He is co-founder and co-editor of monograph series with Duckworth/Bloomsbury and Cambridge University Press. He is an Honorary Citizen of (modern) Sparta and holds the Gold Cross of the Order of Honour awarded by the President of the Hellenic Republic. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and of the Royal Society of Arts.
