The Institute of Classical Studies in the School of Advanced Study, University of London and Department of Greece & Rome at the British Museum are delighted to announce the continuation of their joint seminar series in the 2025/26 academic year.
The next seminar will be held on Wednesday 5 November 2025 from 4pm in the Woburn Suite, Senate House, London on the topic of Nature, the Environment and Culture. Registrations and further details can be found here.
This seminar will explore current research focussing on Nature, the Environment, and Culture and opportunities for new displays on this topic across all departments holding collections from the ancient Mediterranean in the British Museum.
Panellists include:
- Daniel Antoine, Keeper of the Department of Egypt and Sudan
- Paul Collins, Keeper of the Department of Middle East
- Jill Cook, Keeper of the Department of Britain, Europe and Prehistory
- Tom Harrison, Keeper of the Department of Greece and Rome
- Carl Heron, Head of Scientific Research
We invite the submission in advance of questions or remarks relevant to the seminar’s theme. These can be submitted in the text box when you register at the above link, or by sending them to classics@sas.ac.uk
The seminar series takes place in the context of the planned redesign of the British Museum’s ‘Western Range’, including all the galleries devoted to the ancient Mediterranean world. It is designed as an open forum for the discussion of the British Museum’s collections: for the reassessment of individual monuments or objects; thematic approaches; explorations of collection history; or for wider questions of ‘narrative’ and the interconnections between cultures.
