GETTING STARTED
Step-by-step guide on applying for a grant.

When making your application, please consider the following:
Be specific. What exactly are you asking the Classical Association to contribute? In your application, please provide precise costings (indicating where these are estimates, if necessary). This demonstrates to us that you have a well-planned budget and helps the Grants Committee to evaluate your application efficiently.
What is your target audience? Is your event aimed at teachers, school learners or interested members of the public? What is your expected attendance?
If you have any queries, please contact the CA’s Grants Co-ordinator, Jane Fortuna.
When to apply
Grants of up to £5,000 are awarded by the Grants Committee. The committee considers applications four times a year. The deadlines for applications are:
- 1 March
- 1 June
- 1 September
- 1 December
You should submit your application by email in time for the appropriate deadline, making sure that you apply for a deadline which is at least three months before the start of your event. Please note that it can take around a month for decisions to be reached. The CA is unable to award grants retrospectively.
Bids of £5,000 and over are forwarded to the CA Council for decision. If you are applying for £5,000 of more you must submit your application in time for either the March or September deadlines.
OUTCOME OF GRANT APPLICATIONS
You will be contacted by email about the outcome of your application once the CA Grants Committee or CA Council has made its decision. Where a grant is awarded the Classical Association’s support should be appropriately acknowledged in any publications, literature or webpages associated with your event or project.
Please note that all grants are paid in sterling to a UK institutional account.
REPORTS
It is also a condition of any grant that a report should be provided of how the funds were used:
- For small grants (of less than £5,000), the report should include a brief breakdown of expenditure. Where bursaries have been awarded (e.g. for conferences or summer schools), you should also indicate how applications were assessed and/or prioritised).
- For major grants (of £5,000 and over), a full set of accounts should be submitted with the final report.
Please use the Grant Report Form for all reports except Summer Schools, which should use the Summer School Report Form. Your report should be submitted by email within three months of the completion of your event or project. If there are any unused funds left over from the CA grant, you should make arrangements to return these to the Classical Association.
Please take the time now to familiarise yourself with the appropriate report form. This is especially important for summer school applications.
READY TO APPLY?
By now, you should know what we can and can’t support, the deadlines for applications and what you need to include in your report should your application be successful. To proceed with your application, you will need to complete the appropriate application form (see below). Please use the General Grant Application Cover Sheet for applications of less than £5,000 which are not for school or outreach activities, or teaching-related conferences. Applications for £5,000 and over should use the Major Grant Application Cover Sheet.
