Queering the past(s) – Chapter 1: Sappho
‘Queering the Past(s)’ is an interactive online resource, which has been developed by a team of teachers and scholars to address an important gap in school education on LGBTQ+ subjects and to use information from antiquity to help students gain confidence in addressing modern critical (and contentious) issues. The goal of Queering the Past(s) is therefore to help teachers introduce students to topics of sexuality and gender via the ancient Mediterranean.
Chapter 1 on Sappho can be viewed here.
Teachers and students can use these e-books, lessons, and activities to explore LGBTQ+ identities and issues in a range of subject lessons such as English, History and Classics as well as Relationships and Sex Education (RSE). Equally, they could be used by LGBTQ+ student groups and as part of a school-wide celebration of LGBT History Month (February) or Pride Month (June).
The QtP team hope that these resources are interesting, thought-provoking and non-threatening.
Please contact the Project Lead, Nancy Rabinowitz [nrabinow@hamilton.edu] if you have ideas, corrections, or feedback, or would like to get involved as a new contributor to the project. This project was supported by the CA, the Society for Classical Studies and the Archive of Performance of Greek and Roman Drama.
