Teaching & Learning at the Ancient History CPD Day 2026

The CA Ancient History CPD day was held at Harrow School on 27th January 2026, with more than 70 teachers joining us from across the country.

Throughout the day, several common difficulties at both GCSE and A level were identified by our presenters:

  • Literacy – e.g., learning names and places, comprehension of difficult texts
  • Curriculum design – e.g., teaching themes vs narratives, deciding which sources to use, moving students beyond caricatures
  • Developing meaningful and accurate source analysis and evaluation
  • Recall of factual detail, chronology of events and evidence from the sources
  • Exam technique, particularly for SEND and lower attainers

Our speakers identified a range of pedagogical techniques and tools through which to address and overcome these difficulties. We’ve summarised the tips and advice shared onto a document you can download below, which also includes a full list of the workshops delivered on the day, and links to the resources shared.

Further case studies and pedagogical approaches can be found in the book Classics in Action.
