Expert In Residence

OUR COMMUNITY

Our Experts in Residence are researchers who love to engage, entertain and inform a diverse audience about the ancient world. Look out for lots of great content dropping on our social media, blog, and the CA’s flagship podcast, The Classics Podcast.

Our first 2026 Expert in Residence is
Dr Richard Kendall (University of Exeter)

Dr Richard Kendall is a Lecturer in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Exeter and a specialist on the Black Sea. He completed his doctorate, ‘Strategies of Cooperation’, at the University of Edinburgh in 2024, focusing on the meeting of Greeks, Romans and steppe nomads in the city of Olbia, in modern Ukraine, in the early centuries AD.

Richard’s research focuses on the people and places often marginalised in the discipline, such as Scythians and Sarmatians, the homeless in antiquity, and the northern Black Sea and Caucasus region more widely. In 2023, he co-chaired a conference on ‘The Afterlife of the Greco-Persian Wars’ at Kyoto University, Japan, and has presented at several international conferences, perhaps most memorably in a cave in southern Georgia.

We look forward to Richard’s Special Lecture for us in May as well as upcoming podcasts and blog – and in the meantime, if you’d like to ask our Experts about their work or about the ancient world more generally, please fill in this form here:
