We have a long tradition of supporting the study of classical topics in UK schools and colleges, by funding activities which promote engagement with the ancient world.

UK state-maintained schools and colleges are invited to apply for up to £500 towards funding one or more of the following types of event:

  • School talks, events or interactive sessions on the classical world;
  • Workshops and theatrical performances;
  • Greek and Roman study days;
  • Transport costs and/or entrance fees for groups of school students to attend one-day events off-site where this would otherwise be difficult financially (such events might include museum study days, classical exhibitions, re-enactments, trips to archaeological sites);
  • Transport/membership costs for local CA Branches events;
  • Reasonable travel expenses and associated costs for speakers and/or event organisers;
  • Materials for Greek and Roman study days (e.g. classically-themed objects, decorations, or prizes).

Please note that the CA does not offer funding to support trips outside the UK.

The CA does not normally cover speakers’ fees or entertainment for speakers.

Individual state-maintained schools wishing to run competitions with a classical theme (including Greek and Latin reading competitions) may apply for up to £100.  However, up to £500 may be applied for when competitions involve multiple state-maintained schools.  (Anyone wishing to stage a larger-scale competition of this kind is encouraged to explore the possibility of co-operating with a local CA branch).

To apply, you will need to complete a short application form (see below). In your application, you should outline:

  • The type of event you wish to stage or attend;
  • Which students will be involved in the event and how will they benefit? (For example, how many of your pupils will be involved and in which year groups? Will you encourage pupils from other schools to attend?);
  • How this event will connect with your pupils’ broader study of the ancient world;
  • Who will organize the event (e.g. external facilitators or teachers themselves);
  • How you will communicate and/or monitor the success of the initiative for reporting purposes to the CA (e.g. social media posts, blog entry, student questionnaires, photos) and how you intend to acknowledge the CA’s support.

Please also provide:

  • An outline budget, indicating how the money will be spent.
  • A quotation for coach or other travel, and for entrance fees where appropriate. Please ensure that the relative price of train and coach travel has been compared in order to benefit from cheap fares where possible and reduce overall costs.

CA funds are limited, and when assessing grant applications, the Grants Committee will give preference to events which represent good value for money, look to build longer-term engagement with the classical world (either within or beyond the school); encourage equality, diversity and inclusion; and benefit pupils who might otherwise have limited opportunities to study the Greek and Roman worlds. Please include information on your school’s or college’s demographic, such as percentage of pupils in receipt of free school meals or Pupil Premium, and those on the SEN register.

We hope that our grants can offer support for as wide a group of students as possible.  Applications that encourage the sharing of resources and inclusion of pupils from other schools will be looked upon favourably, although this is not a condition for success.

Please apply to one of our small grants deadlines (1 March, 1 June, 1 September or 1 December) at least three months before your proposed event, in order to allow time for assessment.

To apply for funding for schools’ events, please complete the School Grant Application Form and send as an email attachment to canews@classicalassociation.org, ensuring that you have followed the guidelines above in order to avoid any unnecessary delays to your application.
