My Kind of Book: Marcus and the Lost Cloak: A Roman-themed sensory story

by Ailie Finlay

The Classical Association funded us to develop a sensory story with a Roman theme. The story was designed to enable children with complex additional needs to be able to access Roman history. Children with these kinds of needs often find books or other ‘mainstream’ resources un-engaging. They need resources that have been developed with their needs in mind otherwise they remain excluded from learning. Unfortunately, resources like these are very scarce. We are so pleased that the Classical Association recognises the importance of inclusive stories and resources like these.

Our story Marcus and the Lost Cloak combines a simple narrative about a Roman soldier looking for his cloak and introduces the audience to key themes and concepts to do with life on Hadrian’s Wall. Instructions are included for the use of props and objects with the script to make the narrative easier to understand and more engaging for the children.

The story is already proving very popular with children with additional needs, their families, carers and teachers.

The story script is free to download from our website or here
