We are delighted to invite papers from postgraduate and early career researchers for the proposed conference ‘Care and Community in Late Antiquity, 300 – 800 CE’, to be hosted at the University of Edinburgh’s School of History, Classics, and Archaeology, on Friday 25th – Saturday 26th May 2023.
Papers may concern themselves with any time period within the broad range of 300 – 800 CE; we are moreover keen to welcome papers with a diverse geographical range, and which work with any aspect of textual or material culture. Suggested themes include, but are of course not limited to:
- religious aspects of care and community
- aspects of medical care
- care within the household unit
- methods of organising and distributing care
- the role of governing powers in administering care
- methods of creating and/or maintaining (actual/rhetorical) community/s
- understanding of the self within the community
- redifining political communities in late antiquity
- interactions and cross-fertilisation between different models of community
- changing attitudes towards concepts of community and social obligation
- conflict and community
Speakers will be invited to deliver papers of c. 20 minutes, with 10 minutes for questions and discussion. The conference will be held in hybrid format; the Friday session will be in person, with the capacity for online attendance, and the Saturday session online-only.
