We are pleased to announce that the fifth mini conference of the Early Iron Age Aegean Early Career Research Group will be taking place, via Zoom, on Thursday December 7th 2023. The theme of the conference will be Words and Numbers. As archaeologists, ancient historians and classicists, we are traditionally well-versed in the qualitative or interpretive study of material culture and the content of textual sources. For this conference, we are welcoming contributions that, while recognising the value of these traditional tools of analysis, look to apply novel theoretical and methodological approaches to ancient material and textual evidence. We are particularly interested in textual research that moves beyond treating the content of historical and epigraphic sources in isolation (e.g. through computational analyses, or considering the materiality or reception of such evidence), and archaeological work that employs statistical, spatial or other quantitative methods to identify and interpret patterning in the archaeological record. We welcome research on any area of the LBA/EIA/Archaic Aegean and broader early Greek world.
Presentations should be 20 minutes in length, and will be followed by 20 minutes of discussion. As ever, these mini-conferences are meant to be fairly informal and we aim to give group members a chance to introduce their work and to receive a bit of critical feedback from peers. This is also a venue to ‘try out’ a small piece of work —perhaps an idea for a chapter, or a ‘dry run’ for a more formal conference presentation.
The conference will be chaired by Dr Dominic Pollard, Visiting Assistant Professor at the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World at New York University.
If you are interested in presenting your research, please provide your contact details and proposed title in this Google Form. Please do so by the end of the day on Friday November 3rd, so that we can put together and circulate the programme in good time.
In addition, we would like to inform you that there will be one further event organised by our group this academic year. Myrto Kokkalia and Filippos Roussos are planning an in-person symposium on the EIA, for Early Career Researchers, to take place in Oxford in April 2024. The exact date and further details to follow in due course.
