The East London Classics Summer School 2025
The five-day Latin summer school combined rigorous academic study with inspiring enrichment opportunities. Each day included four focused language sessions, where pupils worked on core aspects of GCSE accidence and syntax through a blend of teacher-led explanation, pair work, and independent translation. The students’ enthusiasm and dedication were exemplary, and their progress was recognised with personalised valedictory reports and achievement certificates.
Afternoons concluded with ‘Golden Time’ lectures from guest speakers, covering themes such as Classical London, strategies for vocabulary learning, Roman archaeology, and Virgil’s Aeneid I. A highlight of the week was an off-site visit to King’s College London, where Professor Daniel Orrells delivered a lecture in a university setting, followed by a campus tour and celebration. The programme culminated with a congratulatory message from Professor Mary Beard, encouraging students to pursue their passion for Classics. Feedback was unanimously positive, with all participants reporting increased confidence and deeper understanding of Latin GCSE.
A heartfelt thank you to the Classical Association and its generosity with student bursaries and supporting our initiative.
