Ovid in the West Country 2026

The aim of the competition is to get KS3 students excited about storytelling and the ancient world by listening to a handful of stories from Ovid’s Metamorphoses available via the Classic Tales website.

During the autumn term, students listen to recordings of these stories with their teachers in the classroom before responding creatively to a myth of their choosing.

Key Dates:

Before Sunday 2nd November: Complete the entry form here.

Tuesday 14th July: Online launch event (details below)

Autumn Term 1: Teaching of Ovid’s stories in English lessons, clubs, or writing groups.

Wednesday 9th September: Online idea sharing event to share suggestions for teaching activities.

W/c Monday 3rd November: Students submit their competition entries to teachers. First round of competition judged internally at each school during this first week back.

Wednesday 12th November: Deadline for the submission of all shortlisted entries to Classics for All. Please email digital entries and photos to southwest@classicsforall.org.uk.

Launch Event

We will be hosting a launch event on Tuesday 14th July 2026. Ideal for both new and returning teachers, this provides an opportunity to discuss the competition (specifically, we would like to know what we can do moving forward to make the competition even better than it has been), take away some preliminary ideas and look at the new resources designed for use in school.

To sign up for the event, please fill in the form via the button below. The Zoom meeting link will be shared with those who have signed up on Monday 13th July.

Idea Sharing

Also on Teams, we will be hosting an idea share event on Wednesday, 9th September 2026. This gives us the opportunity to chat, share our own experiences of delivering the competition in the classroom and take away ideas from each other. Details to follow.

Celebrating Success

We are keen to share what all schools are doing both in the run up to, and following, the 2026 competition. With that in mind, please feel free to send photographs, short videos or written testimonials of your work to southwest@classicsforall.org.uk for posting on our Instagram account. Alternatively, feel free to tag @ovidinthewestcountry into your instagram posts for us to reshare.

Note: this is not a Classical Association event – please contact the organisers directly with any enquiries.
