The CA is deeply saddened to report the death of Professor Pat Easterling (1934-2026), a former President of the Classical Association (1989), and the first woman to be appointed the Regius Professor of Greek at the University of Cambridge, a position she held from 1994-2001.

An Honorary Fellow of Newnham College, where she was also a Vice-Principal, Prof. Easterling was formerly a Professor of Greek at University College London and elected an Honorary Fellow there in 1997. She served as President of the Council for University Classics Departments from 1990-1993 and was elected a Fellow of the British Academy.
Her publications focused on the tragic tradition, text and manuscripts, and classical reception, and she served for many years as General Editor of Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics.
Pat was a wonderful champion of classical subjects in schools and communities and worked with many charities in the field to nurture students and create opportunities alongside her perceptive and wide-ranging scholarship. She will be very much missed.
