Dr Lyndsay Coo (Senior Lecturer in Ancient Greek Language and Literature, University of Bristol): ‘Deception and Disguise in Greek Tragedy’ – an exploration of disguise and deception, including through a recently-discovered fragment of Euripides’ Ino.

There are many characters in Greek tragedy who pretend to be something that they are not, but — perhaps surprisingly — relatively few of them employ a disguise as part of this deception. When disguises are used, they raise questions about costuming and performance that are central to the theatrical experience itself. In this talk we will explore the use of disguise in tragedy, paying particular attention to Euripides’ fragmentary Ino, a drama full of disguise and deception; the discovery in 2022 of a spectacular new papyrus fragment of this play allows us to examine these themes in a new light.

Venue: The talk will take place in the Hub at Badminton School, Westbury Rd, Bristol BS9 3BA.

Start time: The talk will start at 7pm. Refreshments will be available from 6.45pm.
