Teaching Ancient Cyprus: Practical, Creative and Experiential Pedagogies to Landscape and Material Culture
The second workshop of the Teaching Ancient Cyprus will take place in the Department of History Heritage and Classics (Swansea University), 27-28 May 2027.
Following the success of the network’s first workshop (Trinity College Dublin, 2025), it continues to bring together a global network of people teaching Ancient Cyprus at a wide range of institutions. This event will build on this and invites proposals for papers, panels, and roundtables on:
- Tactile, experiential, and digital approaches for teaching Cyprus outside Cyprus.
- Ethics regarding the study of the Cypriot landscape and its material culture; especially considering Cyprus’ current political situation and the difficulties involved in teaching and transmitting to students post-1974 ethical issues related to cultural heritage, illegal excavations and archaeological research on the island.
- Innovative and inclusive pedagogies.
- Overview of teaching practices at institutions.
We hope that this meeting will lead to enhanced student experience through further collaboration across institutions and contribute to pedagogical research, via the discussion of the challenges and opportunities we face teaching Cyprus as an independent area of study, practically and theoretically. This will ensure a celebration and exchange of best practices in teaching Cyprus, including practical, creative research-led, and experiential pedagogies. The workshop will provide dedicated and interactive space to hear students’ and early career scholars’ voices and discuss future collaboration and initiatives at the meeting (e.g., education excursions, publications on pedagogy etc.).
If you would like to submit a proposal (this does not have to be limited to the suggestions above), please send an abstract (250 words) to ersin.hussein@swansea.ac.uk by Friday 11th December. Also include your name, affiliation, and whether you would like to attend in person or remotely.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss ideas before submitting a proposal, do not hesitate to get in touch.
