Ars Inquirendi 2026: Querying Pre-Print Cultures with LLMs
St Edmund Hall, Oxford, and online
20–22 November 2026
We are convening over thirty scholars from around the world to answer two questions: in the era of large language models, what can we now discover about the pre-print past that we could not before, and what would justify believing it? Keynotes by Peter Turchin and Marieke Meelen; three hands-on workshops.
Of particular interest to classicists and historians of mathematics: Thomas Kelly (Oxford) asks whether LLMs can parse the mathematical texts of the Codex Arcerianus and the pseudo-Heronian corpus (Friday 20 November, 13:00–16:15 GMT), and John Boyer (Loyola New Orleans) shows what agentic coding makes possible for scholarly digital editions in “Homer for Pleasure, Aristotle for Study” (Friday, 16:30–18:30 GMT).
Registration closes next week: online £10; in person £60 (students and unwaged £25).
Programme and registration details can be found here.
Note: this is not a Classical Association event – please contact the organisers directly with any enquiries.
