VENUE: Lion Walk United Reform Church

Call for Contributions: ‘Reconnecting Roman Britain’

Colchester, Friday 13th & Saturday 14th November 2026

Following the continued success of Reconnecting Roman Britain, the Archaeology Committee of the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies and Colchester Archaeological Trust are pleased to present an in-person conference showcasing the latest research, discoveries, and projects relating to Roman Britain.

Reconnecting Roman Britain aims to strengthen cross-sector and community connections within Roman archaeology, and contributions are welcomed from all areas of the discipline to ensure broad representation across the field.

We invite submissions on any subject connected to the archaeology of Britain in the Roman world, including settlements, material culture, archaeological science, theory, landscape and environment, heritage, reception studies, and related themes. We are keen to hear about the work you have been undertaking, whether through volunteering, commercial archaeology, community engagement, museum practice, independent scholarship, or academic research.

The programme will include longer papers, 5-minute “lightning round” presentations, and poster displays. Please submit an abstract of up to 250 words to the email address below by Sunday, 6 September 2026. Submissions should include your name, contact email, affiliation (if applicable), presentation title, and preferred format. Successful applicants will be notified by the end of September 2026. Any organisation wishing to host an information stall or display should also contact us via the same email address.

Planning your trip

The conference will take place at Lion Walk United Reformed Church, Lion Walk Precinct, Colchester, Essex, CO1 1LX on Saturday, 14 November 2026. Colchester is easily accessible by car, rail, coach, and via London Stansted Airport.

For those arriving on Friday, 13 November, we will arrange a guided walking tour of Roman Colchester, followed by an informal social event at the Roman Circus Visitor Centre, including a private viewing of The Lexden Lady exhibition.

If you would like to attend the conference without presenting a paper, registration will open in early September 2026. The event will be free to attend, but advance booking will be required.
