Call for Papers for ‘An Olive Tree, a Vineyard, and a Ship: (Re)imagining the Greek World Across Time’, a one-day postgraduate conference organised by the A.G. Leventis Centre for Greek Studies at the University of Edinburgh, to be held during the week beginning 30 November 2026.
Inspired by Odysseas Elytis’ image of Greece as an olive tree, a vineyard, and a ship, the conference will explore the ways in which the Greek world has been imagined, appropriated, and reconstructed across different historical periods, geographical contexts, and literary and artistic traditions.
We particularly welcome interdisciplinary and comparative approaches, as well as papers that move beyond conventional divisions between ancient, Byzantine, Ottoman, and modern Greece or examine encounters between Greek and non-Greek perspectives.
Proposals are invited from postgraduate students, PhD candidates, and early career researchers working across Classics, Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies, History, Archaeology, Comparative Literature, Art History, Film and Media Studies, Translation Studies, and related disciplines.
Abstracts of 300 words, accompanied by a short bio, should be sent to glacogn@ed.ac.uk by 15 September 2026. Papers should be in English and approximately 20 minutes in length.
Travel and accommodation expenses for accepted speakers will be subsidised.
