Virgil Society meeting
Dr Nicolò Campodonico (University College, London): ‘Virgil’s Collaborators: Completing the Incomplete Lines in the Aeneid’
Saturday 10 October, 2.30pm
Room 261, Senate House, University of London, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HU
Abstract: ‘The unfinished state of Virgil’s Aeneid is famously evidenced by the presence of 52 incomplete lines throughout the poem. These half-lines were supplemented by scholars and readers, as attested by ancient and medieval commentaries and manuscripts. The analysis of selected examples will show how the authors of these supplements sought to collaborate with Virgil in the revision and completion of his poem. These additions engage meaningfully with the context of the half-lines and their interpretation, thus establishing meaningful connection with other passages in Virgil’s works.’
