The East London Classics Summer School

The East London Classics Summer School 2023 welcomed students from over 8 state schools in London to an intensive GCSE Latin revision course in Hackney.

Over the course of five days, the summer school covered essential grammar in 4 language sessions a day in preparation for the examination in 2024.  Each day culminated in a ‘Golden Time’ where a talk was delivered by a guest speaker. Our lectures explored the Greek god, Dionysus (Prof. Fiachra Mac Góráin, UCL), the making of ancient mosaics (Dr Will Wootton, KCL), Apuleius’ sagae Thessalae (Dr Ben Kolbeck, Cambridge), and Ovid’s Narcissus and Echo (Prof. Daniel Orrells, KCL).

The summer school also included a tour of the Classics Department at King’s College London and gave our students an insight to university life and the opportunities open to them. A surprise appearance from Professor Mary Beard at the end of the week congratulated our students on their outstanding work ethic and dedication over the 5 days.

A heartfelt thank you to the Classical Association and its generosity with student bursaries and supporting our initiative.
