WCC Uk 10th Anniversary Event: ‘Celebrating Women in Classics’ (April 2026)

The Women’s Classical Committee UK held its 10th anniversary event at the Institute of Classical Studies on April 22nd 2026, consisting of a drinks reception followed by a round-table discussion. Prof. Katherine Harloe (Director of the ICS) reflected on the foundation of the WCC and its work over the last ten years, and then chaired three presentations and discussion on the theme of “Celebrating Women in Classics”.

The speakers were:
• Katherine Piu San Russell (Durham): the impact of modern retellings of Classical myth by female authors on the study of Classical Civilization in schools
• Dr Hardeep Dhindsa (Birmingham Museums Trust): women on the Grand Tour
• Prof. Alice König (St Andrews): the use of the women of ancient myth in modern theatre on the themes of peace and war

In addition to the chair and speakers, approximately 30 attendees were present, including long-standing WCC UK members, new members, and non-members. The funding generously provided by the Classical Association enabled the award of two bursaries to attendees who would not otherwise have been able to afford travel and accommodation costs.
